Architectural Cable Netting Canopy • Janda Baik
Architectural Cable Netting Canopy • Janda Baik
Set within the greenery of Janda Baik, this residential project explores how a lightweight structure can create shelter without interrupting the openness of its surroundings.
A combination of stainless steel wire rope and cable netting forms the overhead canopy, creating a fine architectural layer above the space. Rather than relying on a solid roof or heavy enclosure, the open mesh allows light and air to pass through while maintaining visual connections to the trees, sky and surrounding architecture.
The cable netting follows the geometry of the existing structure, creating a continuous field of intersecting lines overhead. From different viewpoints, the fine mesh shifts between subtle and prominent — sometimes almost disappearing into the background, and at other moments becoming a defining architectural element.
The supporting wire rope system works quietly within this composition, providing the framework needed to maintain the canopy’s form while keeping the overall structure visually lightweight.
What makes the space distinctive is the relationship between structure and setting. The canopy does not attempt to compete with the surrounding greenery. Instead, it frames it — allowing the landscape to remain the visual focus while giving the space a defined architectural character.
The result is an overhead structure that feels open rather than enclosed; structured, yet visually light. A simple interplay of wire, mesh, architecture and landscape, designed to let the surroundings remain part of the experience.
